ASNP Natural Product of 2018
ASNP announces the natural compound ¡°rhodomyrtone¡± and the plant Rhodomyrtus toementosa (Aison) Hassk. as natural products of the year 2018 to draw the attentions from the ASNP members and general public.
Rhodomyrtone, isolated from Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Hassk. and other plants, has been an important natural compound as a new antibiotic with new mechanism of action which is required to beat drug-resistant pathogens. It is known that rhodomyrtone increases fluidity of pathogenic bacterial membrane.
Significant works have been performed by our ASNP member Prof. Supayang Voravuthikunchai. ASNP encourages members to investigate more on this compound and plant.

Innovative Growth Forum on Natural Products
2018, June 25 Monday at Seoul, Korea
A group of scientists mainly from pharmacognosy area has hold a forum to ask Korean government to set the fund up for the development of Natural Products Medicine. The main discussion was about the importance of governmental funding to develop natural products medicine in Korea. Some tasks to overcome by Korean scientists, such as industrial scale production of target material, establishment of standardized cultivation practice (precision farming), full life-cycle infra construction for natural products medicine development, and consideration of Nagoya protocol were brought up from the panel discussion.
It would be interesting to see whether this type of typical funding initiation by government-funded research institutes results in practical success in the Korean natural products medicine industry.
